IRENE ZEVON MODERN ART CERAMIC BIRD PITCHER 1956 Irene Zevon (American, 1918-2006) modern art ceramic pottery pitcher jug with bird-like face and handle, signed "Zevon" and dated 1956 on bottom. 6" H x 8.5" Diameter. Note: Nahum Tschacbasov and Irene Zevon were residents of New York City's famed Chelsea Hotel. Tschacbasov was a member of the Expressionist Art group "The Ten" alongside mark Rothko. He taught at the Art Students League and married Zevon, a former student of his. All works by both artists in this sale were acquired from the estae of Tschacbasov's son.

A Majolica Flower and Bird Pitcher Pretty molded milk pitcher with applied handle scrolled bands of fleur de lis at the top and the base molded bird on a flowering branch on one side flowering branch on the opposite side on a basket weave background handle is twig-like marked in underglaze on the bottom. Glazed with pink yellow brown and green.

Collected by Charles Shanafelt ca. 1900. 1.25'' by 1.75'' shallow chip on the underside; light crazing to the slip. Charles Shanafelt (b. 1855) was the senior member of the brickmaking firm of Shanafelt and Keurt. He collected the Cochiti figures offered here about 1900 and about 1915 they were placed in the ''relic room'' of an Ohio county courthouse. They remained there until later in the twentieth century they were transferred to a local historical institution. That institution has deaccessioned this collection and is selling it to further its mission.
